The Kahook Dual Blade KDB is a specialised instrument used in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery to remove a strip of the trabecular meshwork and enhance fluid outflow.
How KDB surgery works
Through a small corneal incision, the surgeon uses the blade to excise a segment of the trabecular meshwork under gonioscopic view. This opens a direct pathway from the anterior chamber into Schlemm’s canal.
- Often combined with cataract surgery in open-angle glaucoma
- Does not leave an implanted device inside the eye
- Procedure is typically quick with a small incision
- Designed for mild to moderate disease needing better pressure control
Recovery and expectations
Patients may experience temporary bleeding or blurred vision that usually settles. Pressure reduction is moderate.
- Some people can reduce the number of glaucoma drops
- Regular monitoring is still required to track long-term control
- Less suitable where very low target pressures are required
- Appropriate mainly for open, not closed, drainage angles
