The iStent is a tiny glaucoma implant placed inside the eye’s drainage angle to help lower pressure.
How the iStent works
In open-angle glaucoma, the natural drainage mesh can become resistant to fluid outflow. The iStent creates a small channel from the front chamber into Schlemm’s canal, improving drainage.
- Implanted through a very small incision, often during cataract surgery
- Designed for mild to moderate open-angle glaucoma
- Usually not visible to others once in place
- May reduce the need for some pressure-lowering drops
Benefits and limitations
The iStent offers a relatively gentle option compared with traditional surgery. However, it may not lower pressure enough in advanced disease.
- Recovery is typically similar to standard cataract surgery
- Patients still need regular glaucoma monitoring
- Some may continue drops or need additional procedures later
- Suitability depends on glaucoma type, target pressure, and eye anatomy
