Cataract surgery is an operation to remove a cloudy natural lens and replace it with a clear artificial intraocular lens. It is one of the most successful and commonly performed eye surgeries.
How cataract surgery works
Through a small incision, the cloudy lens is broken up and removed using ultrasound or laser-assisted techniques. A clear lens implant is then inserted, often correcting pre-existing long-sightedness, short-sightedness, or astigmatism at the same time.
- Usually performed as a day-case procedure with local anaesthetic
- Vision typically improves over days to weeks
- Choice of lens implant can influence the need for glasses afterwards
