The 3-snip procedure is a minor operation on the punctum and canaliculus, often used in chronic canaliculitis or tear drainage problems. It enlarges the opening of the tear duct to improve cleaning and drainage.
How the 3-snip procedure works
Under local anaesthetic, three small cuts reshape the punctum into a larger opening, making it easier to clear debris and allow tears to flow. Additional measures such as curettage or antibiotics may be used at the same time to treat infection.
- Typically performed in the procedure room with you awake
- Discomfort is usually mild and short-lived
- Lubricants and drops are often used for a short period afterwards
- Further lacrimal surgery may be considered if watering persists
