Scleral lens fitting for keratoconus

< 1 min read

Scleral lenses are large, custom-made contact lenses that rest on the white of the eye, vaulting over a steep or irregular cornea. They can give clearer, more comfortable vision for many people with keratoconus.

How fitting works

The fitting process is more detailed than with standard lenses. Several appointments are common while the shape is refined.

  • Special scans measure corneal curvature and overall eye shape
  • Trial lenses help judge comfort, vision, and fluid reservoir depth
  • Your practitioner checks for adequate clearance and healthy tear exchange
  • Fine-tuning may involve adjusting diameter, curvature, or edge design

What to expect day to day

Most patients adapt well with practice and support. Good hygiene and regular reviews keep your eyes safe.

  • Insertion uses a small bowl of preservative-free saline to fill the lens
  • Removal techniques are taught using a suction plunger or fingertip
  • Daily cleaning and occasional protein removal tablets protect the surface
  • Report redness, pain, or reduced wear time promptly for assessment
