LASIK vs LASEK

< 1 min read

LASIK and LASEK are related laser eye surgeries that reshape the cornea, but they handle the surface cells differently. This affects healing time, comfort, and suitability for certain corneas.

Procedural approach

LASIK creates a deeper flap using a microkeratome or femtosecond laser. LASEK loosens only the thin surface layer with alcohol, moves it aside, then replaces it after treatment.

  • LASIK flap includes deeper tissue, allowing very rapid recovery
  • LASEK preserves more corneal strength by avoiding a thicker flap
  • Both apply excimer laser to reshape the cornea underneath the surface cells
  • Choice depends on thickness, curvature, and any previous surgery

Recovery and risk considerations

Most patients achieve good vision with either method. Early comfort and certain rare complications differ.

  • LASIK is typically less painful with functional vision in a day or two
  • LASEK can cause several days of soreness and blurred sight while the surface heals
  • Surface techniques like LASEK may be safer for people at higher ectasia risk
  • Your clinician will explain which option better matches your eyes and activities
