YAG laser iridotomy can feel briefly sharp or uncomfortable, but most people tolerate it well. Numbing drops and sometimes a gel-filled contact lens reduce pain.
Sensations during the laser
The laser makes a tiny opening in the coloured part of the eye. You may notice bright flashes of light and a clicking sound.
- Some patients feel a quick sting or jolt with individual laser shots
- Temporary ache or headache is fairly common
- The procedure usually takes only a few minutes per eye
- Extra laser can be spaced out if you find it uncomfortable
Aftercare and discomfort
Eye ache, redness, and light sensitivity may last for several hours. These symptoms usually respond to drops and simple pain relief.
- Pressure is checked shortly afterwards and treated if raised
- Anti-inflammatory drops help ease tenderness
- Severe, persistent pain or sudden vision loss should be reported urgently
- Most people return to normal routines the following day
