Is YAG laser capsulotomy painful?

< 1 min read

YAG laser capsulotomy is usually not painful. Most people feel only brief flickers of light and mild tapping sensations.

During the procedure

Numbing drops and a special contact lens help keep the eye comfortable and steady. The laser itself does not burn or cut in the way many imagine.

  • You may hear soft clicking sounds from the laser machine
  • Some patients notice slight pressure or a gentle poke sensation
  • Each treatment lasts only a few minutes
  • Discomfort rarely needs anything stronger than simple pain relief

After the laser

Most people go home soon after. Eyes may feel slightly gritty or sensitive to light for a short time.

  • Vision can be misty from dilating drops but clears over hours
  • Mild ache usually settles with rest and over-the-counter pain relief
  • Report any significant pain, redness, or large new floaters urgently
  • Follow-up checks eye pressure and confirms the opening is clear
