Is PRK surgery painful?

< 1 min read

PRK surgery itself is not painful because anaesthetic drops are used, but recovery can be more uncomfortable than LASIK. The surface layer needs time to regrow, which causes soreness.

During the procedure

Numbing drops block pain while the surface cells are removed and the laser reshapes the cornea. You may feel pressure and see lights.

  • The laser application is painless and very quick
  • A bandage contact lens is placed to protect the surface
  • Any discomfort during the procedure is unusual
  • Staff guide you through breathing and fixation

Recovery discomfort

For several days after PRK, moderate pain, burning, and watering are common. These symptoms gradually ease as the epithelium heals.

  • Pain relief tablets and sometimes stronger medication are provided
  • Cold compresses and resting with eyes closed help
  • Severe or prolonged pain should be checked promptly
  • Most people feel much more comfortable after the bandage lens is removed
