Pinguecula removal is usually done for irritation or cosmetic reasons. With local anaesthetic, the procedure itself should not be painful, although the eye may feel sore afterwards.
During the procedure
Numbing drops and possibly a small injection are used. Once they work, you should feel only pressure and gentle movement.
- The pinguecula is carefully excised from the white of the eye
- Sometimes a small graft of conjunctiva is placed over the area
- The operation is relatively short and done as a day case
- Any discomfort is treated immediately with extra anaesthetic
Healing and discomfort
After surgery, expect redness, watering, and a gritty feeling for several days. Pain is usually mild to moderate.
- Lubricants and prescribed drops soothe the surface
- Simple painkillers manage any ache effectively
- Severe pain or visual changes are uncommon and should be checked
- Appearance and comfort usually improve steadily as healing progresses
