Is oculoplastic Surgery painful?

< 1 min read

Most oculoplastic surgery is done under local anaesthetic with or without sedation, so you should not feel sharp pain during the procedure. Some pressure or tugging is normal.

During the operation

Injections or numbing cream are used around the eyelids. Once they take effect, the area feels heavy and numb.

  • You may sense gentle pulling or vibration but not cutting
  • Talking with the team helps ease anxiety
  • Sedation can provide extra relaxation for longer procedures
  • Any discomfort can be reported so more anaesthetic is given

Post-operative discomfort

After surgery, eyelids often feel tight, bruised, and tender. This is usually manageable and improves over days.

  • Cold compresses and prescribed pain tablets help reduce soreness
  • Sleeping with the head raised lessens throbbing and swelling
  • Sharp or worsening pain, especially with vision changes, should be reviewed
  • Most patients manage recovery at home with simple measures
