Is lens replacement surgery painful?

< 1 min read

Lens replacement surgery, similar to cataract surgery, is generally not painful. Local anaesthetic eye drops and sometimes a small injection keep the eye numb throughout.

Experience during surgery

During the procedure you may see lights and feel water moving but not sharp pain. Some people notice brief pressure as the old lens is removed and the new one inserted.

  • Any discomfort is reported immediately so more anaesthetic is added
  • The operation usually takes less than half an hour per eye
  • Sedation can help you feel calm and relaxed
  • You remain awake but should not feel distressed

After the operation

Once anaesthetic wears off, mild ache, grittiness, or light sensitivity is common. These symptoms typically improve within a day or two.

  • Paracetamol or similar tablets usually control pain well
  • Strong pain is rare and should prompt urgent review
  • Following drop instructions helps reduce discomfort and inflammation
  • Most people are pleasantly surprised by how little true pain they experience
