Is laser eye surgery painful?

< 1 min read

Most laser eye surgeries are not painful during the procedure because numbing drops are used. Sensations differ between techniques, with some causing more post-operative discomfort than others.

During the procedure

Numbing drops block sharp pain, though you may feel pressure or gentle touch. The laser itself does not burn in a way you can feel.

  • LASIK and SMILE are usually described as uncomfortable rather than painful
  • Bright lights and slight pressure are common sensations
  • Staff talk you through each step to ease anxiety
  • Procedures are quick, often minutes per eye

Afterwards

Recovery discomfort varies by procedure. PRK and LASEK cause more soreness, while LASIK and SMILE tend to be milder.

  • Burning, watering, and light sensitivity can occur for a day or two
  • Pain relief tablets and drops help control symptoms
  • Severe or worsening pain should be checked promptly
  • Most patients find discomfort manageable and short-lived
