ICL implantable contact lens surgery is usually not painful because local anaesthetic and sometimes sedation are used. Most people feel only pressure or cool water sensations during the procedure.
During surgery
Numbing drops and a small injection keep the eye comfortable. You remain awake but should not feel sharp pain.
- You may notice lights, shadows, and gentle pressure
- Any discomfort can be reported so more anaesthetic is added
- The procedure is relatively quick, often under thirty minutes per eye
- Sedation helps relieve anxiety and awareness
After surgery
Once anaesthetic wears off, mild ache, grittiness, or light sensitivity is common. These symptoms usually settle within a day or two.
- Simple painkillers such as paracetamol usually control pain well
- Strong, worsening pain is unusual and should be reviewed urgently
- Using prescribed drops as directed reduces inflammation and discomfort
- Most patients are surprised by how little true pain they experience
