Endoscopic DCR surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Post-operative discomfort is generally moderate and well controlled.
During the operation
The surgeon works through the nostril using a tiny camera, avoiding external cuts. You remain asleep or deeply sedated.
- No awareness of instruments or drilling during surgery
- Pain control is tailored to you in theatre and recovery
- Nasal packing may cause pressure rather than sharp pain
- Tubes placed in the tear duct can feel slightly strange but not very painful
After surgery
Expect a blocked-nose sensation, mild facial ache, and possible headache. These symptoms usually ease quickly.
- Painkillers such as paracetamol and anti-inflammatories keep discomfort manageable
- Saline nasal sprays and ointment reduce irritation inside the nose
- Heavy bleeding or severe pain is uncommon and should be assessed urgently
- Most people resume light activities within a few days
