Is dermatochalasis surgery painful?

< 1 min read

Dermatochalasis surgery, which removes excess eyelid skin, is usually not painful during the operation thanks to local anaesthetic. Afterwards, discomfort is typically mild to moderate and manageable.

On the day of surgery

Local anaesthetic injections numb the eyelids. You may feel brief stinging then only pressure and movement.

  • Sedation can be added if you prefer to be more relaxed
  • Surgeons check regularly that you remain comfortable
  • More anaesthetic is given if you notice any sharp sensations
  • The procedure time is relatively short for most patients

After the operation

Recovery brings bruising, tightness, and mild aching around the lids. These symptoms usually settle within days.

  • Cold compresses and sleeping propped up reduce swelling and pain
  • Over-the-counter pain relief is usually enough
  • Intense or worsening pain is uncommon and needs urgent review
  • Following wound care instructions helps healing feel smoother
