IOLs intraocular lenses

1 min read

Intraocular lenses are tiny artificial lenses placed inside the eye during cataract or lens replacement surgery to give clear focus.

Why IOLs are used

When a cloudy natural lens cataract is removed, it must be replaced so the eye can focus light sharply again.

Modern lens implants are carefully chosen using detailed measurements to match your prescription and lifestyle needs.

  • Monofocal lenses usually provide clear distance vision, often with glasses for reading
  • Multifocal or extended depth of focus lenses can reduce dependence on spectacles at several distances
  • Toric lenses help correct astigmatism an uneven curve at the front of the eye
  • Premium options are discussed in detail before surgery so expectations are realistic

Living with an intraocular lens

IOLs are designed to stay in place for life, so you should not feel them or see them directly.

Vision often improves quickly after surgery, though the brain may take time to adapt to new focusing patterns, especially with multifocal designs.

  • Regular eye tests remain important to monitor eye health and any prescription fine tuning
  • Glare or halos around lights may occur at first and often fade with time
  • Posterior capsule opacification clouding behind the lens can be treated with a simple YAG laser if needed
  • Report sudden pain, redness, or loss of vision urgently after any eye operation
