Eyelid surgery blepharoplasty

< 1 min read

Blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery that removes or reshapes excess skin and tissue to relieve heaviness and improve field of vision or appearance.

Reasons for eyelid surgery

With age, the skin and supporting tissues of the eyelids loosen, leading to hooded upper lids or bags under the eyes.

This can make eyes feel tired, interfere with seeing upwards, or cause self consciousness about looking worn out.

  • Upper lid surgery can lift overhanging skin away from the eyelashes
  • Lower lid procedures focus more on bags or puffiness
  • Sometimes combined with brow lift or ptosis surgery for best results
  • Both functional and cosmetic benefits may be possible

What to expect before and after

Surgery is usually carried out under local anaesthetic with or without light sedation, using fine incisions hidden in natural creases or just inside the lid.

Bruising, swelling, and tightness are common during the first one to two weeks, then gradually settle.

  • Cold compresses and head elevation help reduce swelling and discomfort
  • Temporary dryness or mild blurred vision can occur and is eased with lubricating drops
  • Most people return to normal activities within two weeks, avoiding heavy exertion initially
  • Contact the team promptly if pain worsens suddenly or vision drops
