YAG laser iridotomy can cause sharp but brief discomfort with some laser shots. However, numbing drops and careful technique keep most treatments tolerable.
During the laser
A contact lens is placed on the eye after anaesthetic drops. You see bright flashes and hear clicks as the laser makes a tiny opening.
- Some pulses may feel like a quick sting or electric jolt
- Pain usually lasts only a second or two per pulse
- The whole procedure typically finishes within minutes
- Additional drops or pauses can be given if you need a break
Afterwards
Eye ache and headache are common for several hours. These generally respond well to painkillers and drops.
- Anti-inflammatory and pressure-lowering drops may be used
- Severe or persistent pain, especially with blurred vision, needs urgent review
- Most people resume usual activities by the next day
- Any ongoing discomfort should be discussed at follow-up
