Does LASEK surgery hurt?

< 1 min read

LASEK surgery is similar to PRK in that the procedure is painless but recovery can be sore. The surface layer needs time to heal, causing temporary discomfort.

On the day of surgery

Numbing drops and alcohol loosening of the epithelium prevent pain. The laser reshaping step is quick and not felt.

  • You may sense pressure or cool fluid but no cutting
  • A bandage contact lens protects the surface afterwards
  • Any pain during the procedure is unusual
  • Staff monitor comfort closely

After LASEK

Once anaesthetic wears off, burning, watering, and gritty sensations are common for several days. Pain gradually improves.

  • Pain medications and lubricants are supplied
  • Resting with eyes closed and using dark glasses can help
  • New or severe pain or vision loss should be assessed urgently
  • Most people feel markedly better by the end of the first week
