Does ICL surgery hurt?

< 1 min read

ICL surgery is usually not painful because the eye is carefully numbed with drops and sometimes a small injection. Most people feel only pressure or cool water sensations.

During the procedure

You remain awake but comfortable while the lens is inserted through a tiny incision and positioned behind the iris.

  • Lights and movement are visible but not painful
  • Any discomfort is reported immediately so more anaesthetic is given
  • The procedure is relatively quick, often under half an hour
  • Sedation can be provided if you feel anxious

After surgery

Once anaesthetic wears off, you may notice mild ache, grittiness, or light sensitivity. These usually settle within a day or two.

  • Simple painkillers usually handle discomfort well
  • Severe pain, nausea, or sudden vision loss needs urgent assessment
  • Using prescribed drops reduces inflammation and improves comfort
  • Most patients describe the experience as far less painful than expected
