The 3 snip procedure is a small operation on the lower eyelid opening punctum to widen it and improve tear drainage in people troubled by watering eyes.
Why a 3 snip procedure is used
Sometimes the problem is not a blocked tear duct deeper in the nose but a very tight or scarred punctum that tears cannot easily enter. By making three tiny cuts, the surgeon enlarges this opening so tears can flow into the drainage system again.
- Helpful when watering is due to punctal narrowing stenosis
- Often performed under local anaesthetic in a clinic or day theatre
- Quick procedure with minimal downtime
- Can be combined with other tear drainage treatments if needed
What happens and how it feels afterwards
The eye area is numbed with drops and sometimes a small injection. Fine scissors are used to remove a tiny wedge of tissue, creating a slightly larger, more rounded opening.
- Mild soreness or a scratchy feeling is common for a day or two
- Lubricating drops and ointment keep the area comfortable while it heals
- Most people return to normal activities the next day
- Tell your clinician if watering persists or redness and pain increase
