What causes shadowed vision?

< 1 min read

Shadowed vision is the sense of dark shapes or areas partially obscuring sight. It often reflects structural problems casting shadows on the retina.

Common Causes

Retinal detachment, retinal tears, and vitreous haemorrhage produce moving or fixed shadows in part of the field. Localised scarring, macular lesions, and glaucoma-related nerve damage can also create areas of dimmer or absent vision.

  • A curtain-like shadow progressing across vision is especially concerning
  • Shadowed side vision may go unnoticed until advanced without field testing
  • Eyelid droop or ptosis can cast a physical shadow over the top of the field
  • Systemic vascular events and strokes may create hemifield shadows

Importance of Prompt Review

New or expanding shadows need urgent assessment to exclude detachment or vascular occlusion. Visual field testing and imaging help define extent and cause.

  • Timely retinal surgery can prevent progression of detachment
  • Systemic risk-factor control is key in vascular disorders
  • Rehabilitation strategies assist patients with permanent field deficits
  • Safety and driving advice should be tailored to field status
