What causes light sensitivity?

< 1 min read

Light sensitivity, or photophobia, is discomfort or pain in bright light. It can occur with many eye conditions or after certain treatments.

Situations where photophobia occurs

Common causes include dry eye, uveitis, corneal abrasions, migraine and recent pupil dilation. People may squint, avoid bright environments or experience watering and headache.

  • Sudden severe photophobia with redness and blurred vision needs urgent assessment
  • Managing the underlying eye condition usually improves symptoms
  • Sunglasses and hats can offer practical day-to-day relief
  • Some medicines and neurological conditions can also contribute
