What causes gritty sensation?

< 1 min read

A gritty sensation is closely related to sandy or scratchy feelings and suggests the ocular surface is not smooth and well lubricated. Dry eye is the leading contributor.

Contributing Factors

Meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis, and environmental dryness disrupt the tear film, leaving the eye feeling gritty. Mild allergic or viral conjunctivitis and exposure to irritants such as smoke or chlorine can have similar effects.

  • Patients may describe constant awareness of the eyes or need to blink
  • Symptoms often accompany redness, watering, or transient blur
  • Chronic contact lens wear increases risk of surface irritation
  • Systemic medications, including antihistamines and antidepressants, can worsen dryness

Relief

Regular lubrication, lid care, and addressing environmental triggers usually reduce grittiness. Persistent symptoms merit assessment for dry eye disease or other surface disorders.

  • Tailored dry eye treatment plans may include gels, ointments, or prescription drops
  • Avoiding smoke and irritant cosmetics helps protect the surface
  • Punctal plugs or prescription therapies may be considered in moderate to severe cases
  • Regular follow-up helps fine‑tune management
