Glare and halos describe light spreading or rings around bright sources, particularly in low light. They arise when light is scattered or aberrated as it passes through the eye.
Structures involved
Cataract, corneal surface irregularity and tear film instability are common causes of increased scatter. Refractive procedures and multifocal intraocular lenses can temporarily or persistently alter higher-order aberrations and produce halos.
- Large pupils in the dark make optical imperfections more noticeable
- Glare severe enough to affect driving should be assessed
- Treating dry eye or changing lenses may reduce symptoms
- Assessment focuses on the cornea, lens and refraction
