Eye strain describes tired, uncomfortable eyes after visual tasks such as reading or computer work. It is usually linked to how the eyes focus and coordinate rather than a serious disease.
Typical triggers
Uncorrected refractive error, prolonged close work and poor lighting can all make the focusing system work harder. Reduced blinking at screens and underlying dry eye often add to the sense of fatigue.
- Symptoms include ache around the eyes, blur and difficulty concentrating
- Regular breaks and attention to posture can lessen strain
- Updated spectacles or contact lenses may be required
- Persistent or one-sided discomfort should be assessed
