What causes eye crusting?

< 1 min read

Eye crusting refers to dried discharge or debris on the lashes and lid margins, often noticed on waking. It signals increased mucus, oily secretions, or infection.

Typical Causes

Chronic blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, and seborrhoeic skin conditions frequently produce crusts and flakes along the lashes. Acute bacterial conjunctivitis leads to thicker crusts, while allergic or viral conditions cause finer debris.

  • Make‑up residue and poor lid hygiene can worsen crusting
  • Contact lens wear may contribute to inflammation and discharge
  • Skin disorders such as rosacea or eczema often involve the lids
  • Recurrent unilateral crusting can rarely indicate more serious lid disease

Management

Lid hygiene with suitable wipes or cleansers is the cornerstone of treatment. Medical therapy is added when infection or significant inflammation is present.

  • Warm compresses help soften crusts before cleaning
  • Persistent or asymmetric crusting should be evaluated by an eye professional
  • Make‑up tools and products should be replaced regularly to reduce contamination
  • Systemic conditions may require joint dermatological or medical care
