What causes droopy eyelids?

< 1 min read

Droopy eyelids can be due to true ptosis, excess eyelid skin (dermatochalasis) or brow descent. Each mechanism narrows the opening between the lids and may reduce the field of view.

Mechanisms and features

Ptosis arises when the levator muscle or its tendon weakens, stretches or detaches, while dermatochalasis reflects lax skin and underlying tissues. Brow ptosis adds additional weight onto the upper lid, and more than one factor may be present in the same person.

  • Symptoms include heaviness, tired-looking eyes and brow ache
  • Some neurological and muscular disorders can cause ptosis
  • Visual field testing may show obstruction from overhanging skin
  • Treatment options include ptosis repair, blepharoplasty and brow lift
