Who is suitable for ICL surgery?

< 1 min read

ICL surgery suits people with moderate to high prescriptions whose eyes are otherwise healthy and who are not ideal candidates for corneal laser procedures.

Typical candidate profile

Several factors are assessed together.

  • Age usually between 21 and 45 with a stable prescription
  • Moderate to high myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism within ICL ranges
  • Adequate anterior chamber depth and healthy corneal endothelium
  • No significant glaucoma, uncontrolled uveitis, or retinal disease
  • Strong motivation to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses

When ICL is especially useful

ICLs fill gaps left by laser surgery.

  • Very high myopia where laser would remove too much corneal tissue
  • Relatively thin or borderline corneas unsuitable for LASIK or SMILE
  • Dry eye or other surface issues that make laser less attractive
  • Desire for a reversible procedure that preserves the natural lens
  • Expectation of long‑term follow‑up and possible future lens surgery
