YAG capsulotomy is suitable once the eye has healed from cataract surgery and posterior capsule opacification is clearly affecting vision.
Timing considerations
The capsule should be stable before treatment.
- Usually performed months or years after surgery, not in the immediate recovery period
- Confirmation that post‑operative inflammation has settled
- Stable refraction so that glasses, if needed, can be checked afterwards
- Clear documentation that capsule clouding explains current symptoms
- Coordination with any other planned eye procedures
Reasons not to rush
Waiting is advisable in some scenarios.
- Very early minor opacification with minimal impact on function
- Uncertain cause of blur where further investigation is required
- Need to evaluate macular or retinal status first
- Recent retinal surgery where extra caution is preferred
- Patient preference to defer until symptoms become more significant
