ICL surgery is not recommended when eye anatomy, general health, or expectations make the risks outweigh the potential benefits.
Ocular reasons to avoid ICL
Some eye conditions make it unsafe or unhelpful.
- Shallow anterior chamber or narrow angles
- Poor endothelial cell count or corneal disease
- Significant glaucoma, uncontrolled ocular hypertension, or uveitis
- Early cataracts where lens replacement is more logical
- Macular or retinal disease that limits visual potential
General and preference‑based reasons
Context and expectations also matter.
- Unstable prescription or suspected keratoconus
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or poorly controlled systemic disease
- Very high anxiety or unrealistic expectation of perfect vision
- Happy, comfortable use of glasses or contacts without major limitations
- Inability to commit to follow‑up or manage post‑operative care
