YAG capsulotomy can be suitable after retinal detachment repair, but the risk of another detachment is higher, so decisions are individualised.
When it may be justified
Visual benefit must clearly outweigh risk.
- Stable, successfully repaired retina with no active breaks
- Significant PCO limiting vision or retinal assessment
- Close collaboration with the retinal surgeon
- Use of minimal laser energy and carefully sized opening
- Detailed education about symptoms of retinal tears or detachment
Extra precautions
Monitoring is more intensive than usual.
- Thorough pre‑laser examination of the peripheral retina
- Possible prophylactic treatment of suspicious weak areas
- Follow‑up visits focused on early detection of any new breaks
- Low threshold for urgent review if flashes, floaters, or a shadow appear
- Consideration of alternative strategies if perceived risk is too high
