Is YAG capsulotomy suitable if reading vision is affected?

< 1 min read

YAG capsulotomy is often suitable when posterior capsule opacification is making reading more difficult after cataract surgery.

Reading problems related to PCO

Capsule haze affects fine detail.

  • Letters appearing washed out, fuzzy, or surrounded by a glow
  • Needing stronger light or magnification than before
  • Reading speed slowing despite up‑to‑date glasses
  • Capsule clouding visible on examination matching your symptoms
  • Near and intermediate tasks such as phone or tablet use becoming harder

Ensuring the right target

Other causes of near difficulties should be considered.

  • Presbyopic changes, macular disease, or dry eye excluded or treated
  • Confirmation that PCO is significant enough to warrant laser
  • Explanation that YAG improves clarity but not underlying macular problems
  • Continuing appropriate reading glasses after YAG if still needed
  • Monitoring for any new distortion or persistent blur after treatment
