YAG capsulotomy is often suitable when posterior capsule opacification is making reading more difficult after cataract surgery.
Reading problems related to PCO
Capsule haze affects fine detail.
- Letters appearing washed out, fuzzy, or surrounded by a glow
- Needing stronger light or magnification than before
- Reading speed slowing despite up‑to‑date glasses
- Capsule clouding visible on examination matching your symptoms
- Near and intermediate tasks such as phone or tablet use becoming harder
Ensuring the right target
Other causes of near difficulties should be considered.
- Presbyopic changes, macular disease, or dry eye excluded or treated
- Confirmation that PCO is significant enough to warrant laser
- Explanation that YAG improves clarity but not underlying macular problems
- Continuing appropriate reading glasses after YAG if still needed
- Monitoring for any new distortion or persistent blur after treatment
