Is PresbyMAX surgery suitable if you have retinal problems?

< 1 min read

PresbyMAX is approached very cautiously in patients with retinal problems, and is often not recommended when retinal function is significantly reduced.

Concerns in retinal disease

Vision may not improve as hoped.

  • Conditions such as diabetic maculopathy, vein occlusions, or inherited dystrophies limit potential acuity
  • Multifocal laser optics can further reduce contrast in compromised retinas
  • Progressive retinal disease may quickly overshadow any refractive benefit
  • Retinal treatments and monitoring remain the priority
  • Risk of patient dissatisfaction if expectations are unrealistically high

When it might still be considered

Only under specialist guidance.

  • Stable, mild retinal changes with good corrected acuity
  • Retinal specialist agrees that additional risk is acceptable
  • Comprehensive counselling about limited and uncertain gain
  • Plan for ongoing retinal follow‑up after surgery
  • Often, lens‑based or non‑surgical solutions are favoured instead
