Is laser eye surgery suitable under 21?

< 1 min read

Laser eye surgery is usually not recommended under 21, because younger eyes are still changing and prescriptions are less stable.

Why under-21s are rarely treated

During the late teens and early twenties, short-sight can continue to increase. Treating too early risks under- or over-correction as the eye keeps growing.

  • Prescriptions often change more quickly in teenagers and young adults
  • Results may not last if treatment is done before stability
  • There is more risk of needing repeat procedures or strong glasses again
  • Corneal shape can still be maturing
  • Contact lenses or glasses are usually safer options at this stage

Possible exceptions

In very rare situations with strong need, earlier surgery might be considered after thorough specialist assessment. This is unusual and carefully weighed.

  • Medical or occupational reasons where alternatives are not possible
  • Documented stable prescription over several years, despite young age
  • Healthy, thick corneas with low risk of weakening
  • Full understanding of the increased chance of further change
  • Often, waiting a few years gives safer, more predictable outcomes
