Is laser eye surgery suitable if you have lattice degeneration?

< 1 min read

Lattice degeneration alone does not automatically prevent laser eye surgery, but it does increase retinal detachment risk and must be assessed carefully.

Precautions before considering surgery

Because both lattice and high myopia carry retinal risks, surgeons usually request a detailed retinal examination first.

  • Comprehensive dilated retinal check by a retinal specialist
  • Prophylactic laser treatment to weak areas if there is a history of tears or detachment
  • Clear documentation of the extent and stability of lattice
  • Discussion of detachment warning symptoms before and after surgery
  • Agreement that refractive benefits justify the small added risk

When lattice may steer you away from laser

In some eyes, the overall detachment risk becomes high enough that non‑surgical options are safer.

  • Previous retinal detachment in either eye
  • Multiple holes or tears despite previous treatment
  • Very high myopia and thin peripheral retina
  • Reluctance to accept the small additional risk from transient pressure changes during surgery
  • Preference for continuing with contact lenses or glasses instead
