Is laser eye surgery suitable if you have dry eyes?

< 1 min read

Mild, well-controlled dry eye may still be compatible with laser eye surgery, but significant ocular surface disease needs careful treatment before considering any corneal procedure.

Why dry eye matters

Laser can temporarily worsen dryness by cutting corneal nerves and disrupting the tear film, which can blur vision and cause discomfort.

  • Existing dry eye or meibomian gland dysfunction can be exacerbated
  • Poor tear film quality makes pre-operative measurements less reliable
  • Severe ocular surface disease is a risk factor for post-op pain and fluctuating vision
  • Persistent dryness may limit satisfaction even if refraction is accurate
  • Underlying causes such as blepharitis or autoimmune disease must be addressed

Optimising the surface before surgery

Improving ocular surface health first can transform both candidacy and final results.

  • Regular lubricants, lid hygiene, and treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Environmental measures such as screen breaks and humidification
  • Reassessing topography and tear stability once symptoms improve
  • Considering surface procedures or non-surgical correction if dryness remains severe
  • Ongoing dry-eye care after surgery to maintain comfort and clarity
