Whether it is better to wait depends on how much cataracts affect your life; there is no single “right” stage for everyone.
Reasons waiting can be reasonable
Early or mild cataracts often change slowly.
- Vision still meets driving and work needs comfortably
- Symptoms are mild and manageable with glasses and good lighting
- Other medical issues need attention before elective eye surgery
- Personal preference not to have surgery until a clearer benefit is likely
- Regular monitoring is in place to detect progression
Reasons not to delay too long
Waiting can eventually reduce safety or complicate surgery.
- Increasing difficulties with driving, mobility, or falls risk
- Job or caring responsibilities made harder by declining vision
- Very dense cataracts becoming technically more challenging to remove
- Need for better retinal visibility for diagnosis or treatment
- Growing frustration or loss of independence due to poor sight
