Is ICL surgery suitable if prescription is still changing?

< 1 min read

ICL surgery is generally not suitable if your prescription is still changing significantly.

Why ongoing change is a concern

Surgery would soon be out of date.

  • Risk of under‑ or over‑correction as myopia or astigmatism progresses
  • Possibility of needing repeat procedures or lens exchange
  • Unclear whether progression is due to normal growth or an underlying disease
  • Harder to predict long‑term visual outcomes
  • Standard guidelines recommend waiting until refraction stabilises

Preferred approach

Monitoring and further investigation come first.

  • Regular eye tests to confirm the rate and pattern of change
  • Screening for keratoconus or other ectatic disorders
  • Consideration of stronger glasses or contact lenses in the meantime
  • Re‑evaluation for ICL once stability is documented
  • Discussion of lifestyle and occupational needs while waiting
