Is ICL surgery suitable for high myopia?

< 1 min read

Yes. ICL surgery is particularly well suited for high myopia, where laser eye surgery may be less safe or predictable.

Why ICL works well in high myopia

It corrects power without thinning the cornea.

  • Effective correction usually up to around -18 dioptres, and sometimes slightly higher
  • Preserves corneal strength and shape
  • Often provides sharper optics than very strong glasses or contacts
  • Reversible if future lens or retinal surgery is required
  • Can be combined with toric correction if astigmatism is present

Key safety checks

High myopes need careful screening.

  • Retinal examination for lattice, tears, or previous detachment
  • Measurement of anterior chamber depth and angle width
  • Endothelial cell counts to ensure long‑term corneal health
  • Counselling about the ongoing risk of myopic retinal complications
  • Long‑term follow‑up for vault, pressure, and lens transparency
