Is ICL surgery suitable for astigmatism?

< 1 min read

Yes. Toric ICLs are specifically designed to treat myopic or hyperopic astigmatism alongside the main spherical prescription.

When toric ICLs work well

They correct both components in a single implant.

  • Regular astigmatism typically up to about 3-6 dioptres
  • Combined with moderate to high myopia or hyperopia within ICL limits
  • Stable corneal shape without significant keratoconus or ectasia
  • Precise rotational alignment at surgery to maximise effect
  • Potential for excellent uncorrected vision when properly centred and oriented

Considerations with astigmatic ICLs

Alignment and stability are critical.

  • Preoperative marking and imaging to determine correct axis
  • Follow‑up to ensure the lens has not rotated significantly
  • Possibility of minor residual astigmatism managed with glasses or small laser tweaks
  • Alternative strategies if astigmatism is irregular or linked to corneal disease
  • Recognition that accurate biometry is essential for a predictable outcome
