Is cataract surgery suitable for mild cataracts?

< 1 min read

Mild cataracts are often managed with observation, but surgery can still be appropriate if symptoms out of proportion to their appearance are affecting your life.

Indicators that surgery can wait

Many people with mild cataracts notice little or no practical impact.

  • Vision that easily meets driving and work requirements
  • Glasses updates still giving sharp, comfortable sight
  • Only subtle changes in colour or contrast that you can tolerate
  • No major difficulties in dim light or with headlights
  • Personal preference to avoid surgery while symptoms are mild

Signs that mild‑looking cataracts are significant

Sometimes small changes cause large problems.

  • Pronounced glare, especially from posterior subcapsular changes
  • Everyday activities like reading, sewing, or driving becoming stressful
  • Noticeable difference between the two eyes causing imbalance
  • Rapid deterioration of near or distance tasks over months
  • Agreement that removing the lens should give meaningful benefit
