Does everyone with PCO need YAG capsulotomy?

< 1 min read

No. Not everyone with posterior capsule opacification needs YAG capsulotomy; visible PCO alone is not an indication.

Who does not usually need laser

Treatment is symptom‑driven.

  • People with mild PCO and good, comfortable vision
  • Patients unaware of any change until told during examination
  • Individuals whose blur is mainly due to other conditions
  • Those who prefer to avoid procedures while function remains good
  • Eyes with high detachment risk where benefit from treating mild PCO is small

Who is more likely to benefit

Moderate or dense PCO with symptoms is different.

  • Glare, haze, or acuity loss affecting daily life
  • Need for a clearer view to manage other eye diseases
  • Occupation or hobbies placing high demands on visual clarity
  • Stable general and ocular health suitable for a brief outpatient laser
  • Understanding that YAG addresses haze but not other eye problems
