When to stop eye drops after surgery?

< 1 min read

Eye drops after surgery should only be reduced or stopped according to your surgeon’s instructions.

Typical drop schedules

Many patients use antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops for several weeks. Doses often taper gradually rather than stopping suddenly.

  • Your clinic will usually provide a written timetable
  • Steroid drops are often reduced stepwise to prevent rebound inflammation
  • Lubricating drops may be continued long term for comfort
  • Individual plans vary depending on the procedure and healing

Why you should not change drops yourself

Stopping too early can increase the risk of infection or inflammation. Using drops for longer than advised may also cause problems.

  • Contact the eye unit if you run out earlier than planned
  • Ask before making any adjustments for side effects
  • Take your drop bottles to follow-up visits for review
  • Use a chart or alarms to keep track of tapering schedules
