After ptosis surgery, the upper eyelid is lifted to improve vision and appearance. Bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort are normal in the early days and usually improve steadily.
Immediately after surgery
Your upper lid may feel tight, heavy, or numb. The eyelid position can look slightly higher than expected at first, then settle as swelling reduces.
- Vision may be blurred by ointment or swelling.
- Bruising often peaks at two to three days before fading.
- Cold compresses and simple pain relief usually control discomfort.
- Prescribed drops and ointments help prevent infection and dryness.
- You will receive instructions on head elevation, activity limits, and follow-up.
Healing and lid position
Lid height continues to change subtly over several weeks. Final position may not be apparent for up to three months.
- Stitches are usually removed within five to ten days, depending on the technique.
- Temporary asymmetry between the two eyes is common while healing.
- Report severe pain, sudden droop, or inability to close the eye promptly.
- Protect the eye surface with lubricants, especially at night if closure is incomplete.
- Follow-up visits allow fine-tuning and monitoring of lid function.
