Mild stinging or brief blurring is common when using eye drops after surgery. However, strong or persistent burning should be checked.
Normal reactions to eye drops
Many medicated drops contain preservatives or active ingredients that can tingle. This sensation usually fades within a few seconds.
- Cold drops from the fridge may sting more than room-temperature ones
- Some antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drops are naturally more irritating
- Temporary watering is a normal response
- Blurred vision for a few minutes may follow thicker drops or ointments
When stinging needs review
If drops cause intense pain, rash, or swelling, you may be reacting to an ingredient. Your team can often switch to an alternative.
- Report severe or long-lasting burning to your clinic
- Do not stop essential drops, such as steroids, without advice
- Ask whether preservative-free options are suitable for you
- Check that you are spacing multiple drops as instructed
