Sutures stitches usually settle quietly, but sometimes they can loosen, irritate, or become infected.
Possible symptoms of suture issues
Changes are often localised to the stitched area. Pay attention to any new or increasing discomfort after an initial period of improvement.
- Persistent scratching sensation, as though something is in the eye
- Localised redness or a visible loop of exposed thread
- Small areas of discharge or crusting around the suture
- Sudden change in lid position or wound opening
What to do if you suspect a problem
Do not cut or pull at stitches yourself. A quick review allows safe adjustment or removal if needed.
- Contact your clinic if irritation or redness is not improving
- Report any drop in vision, pain, or swelling around the stitched area
- Continue cleaning and drops as advised unless told otherwise
- Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments for suture checks
