After retinal detachment repair, it is common for vision to be blurred, distorted, or darker for a while. Improvement is usually gradual and may continue for months.
Early visual experiences
Immediately after surgery, the eye can feel sore and light-sensitive. A gas or oil bubble may cause a moving line, shimmering, or very blurred vision.
- Colours and shapes can look washed out or wavy at first
- Vision often improves as the bubble absorbs or the oil is removed
- Reading and detailed work may feel difficult initially
- Regular follow-ups check that the retina remains flat
Longer-term outcomes
The final level of vision depends on how long the macula was detached and other eye conditions. Many people regain useful sight, but some changes can be permanent.
- Fine detail and contrast may never fully return in the affected eye
- Glasses or contact lens changes may be needed afterwards
- Report new flashes, floaters, or a curtain over vision urgently
- Protect the other eye with regular checks and healthy lifestyle choices
