Stent removal process and recovery

< 1 min read

Many tear duct operations use a silicone stent which is later removed in clinic. Knowing what to expect at removal can ease worries about discomfort or tearing.

How the stent is removed

The stent ends are usually visible at the inner corner of the eyelids. In clinic the clinician gently cuts and slides the silicone out through the nose or eyelid.

The procedure is quick and is often described as strange rather than painful. Mild watering or sneezing afterwards is normal.

After stent removal

Once the stent is out the new passage must continue working on its own. Most people notice little change in comfort.

  • Brief watering or pink tinged tears on the day
  • Mild soreness inside the nose or inner eyelid
  • Continued use of drops or sprays for a short period
  • Ability to clean the eyelids more easily around the inner corner
